[1] Kitchen Faucet Watermark introduces the new Loft kitchen faucet. The faucet features a spout that swivels a full 180 degrees and can come with different size projections. The Loft faucet is available in 35 finishes.
Knife ID There are three main types of kitchen knives: carbon steel, high- carbon stainless-steel and ceramic. High-carbon knives are the softest metal and tend to stay sharper longer. The downside is that they tend to rust and stain. Ceramic knives also stay very sharp, but they can break, so they must be handled with extreme care.
To open up a small kitchen, remove upper cabinet doors. Paint the inside a bright color and keep everything organized. Paint can dramatically update an old appliance. Be sure to use a paint made specifically for appliances, because other paints will not adhere correctly. Tired of your tiled backsplash, but cant afford to replace all the tiles? Remove a few with a grout remover and chisel, then replace with decorative tiles that fit your kitchens theme.

High-end technology is about to get even better. Reclining in the technowomb of a high-end home theater with remote control in hand, its hard to imagine how things could get any more cutting-edge. Even consumer-grade home theater components bought at Best Buy can deliver relatively impressive results, but todays state-of-the-art home theater is a far more extraordinary -and expensive -beast. A high-end home theater, flexing seven channels of high-powered audio (at least 200 watts per channel), matched speakers, a top-notch, stand-alone surround sound processor, an outboard video processor, numerous source components, top quality interconnects, and comfy seating-installed by a certified professional-can drag you well into six figures. But dont flinch at the price, because in this exalted range you can expect to get what you pay for.
The new Dell 3100MP fits into the home category, especially with a price tag of $2,499. The 3.5-pound projector can display the output of just about every video device, from computers to DVD players, at a size that the company says is five times that of the largest big- screen television. It uses the industry-standard Texas Instruments digital light processing, or DLP, chip for an XGA resolution of 1,024 by 768 pixels and a brightness of 1,050 lumens. A lumen, simply put, is the amount of light one candle can shine on a one-foot-square section of a surface. Comparable units range from 800 to 1,100 lumens. The Dell 3100MP can handle all television standards, meaning it can be used worldwide without modification. It is housed in a magnesium case and ships with cables to connect to all current video devices.

In situations where a single parent lives with someone outside of marriage, that person may be referred to as a co parent. Co-parent is also the name given to the partner in a homosexual relationship who shares the household and parenting responsibilities with a childs legal adoptive or biological parent.

The home which was owned by the family prior to a divorce or separation is referred to as the family home in many state laws. In court settlements of divorce and child custody issues, the sale of the family home may be prohibited as long as the minor children are still living there with the custodial parent. The sale of the home may be permitted (or required to pay the noncustodial parent his or her share of its value) if the custodial parent moves or remarries, or when the children leave home to establish their own residences.

The term extended family traditionally meant the biological relatives of a nuclear family; i.e., the parents, sisters, and brothers of both members of a married couple. It was sometimes used to refer to the people living in the household beyond the parents and children. As family relationships and configurations have become more complex due to divorce and remarriage, extended family has come to refer to all the biological, adoptive, step-, and half-relatives.

Government agencies and other statistics-gathering organizations use the term head of household to refer to the person who contributes more than half of the necessary support of the family members (other than the spouse); in common usage, the head of household is the person who provides primary financial support for the family.

In some cases, a stepparent will legally adopt his or her spouses children from a previous marriage. The biological father or mother must either be absent with no legal claim to custody, or must grant permission for the stepparent to adopt.

In situations where a single parent lives with someone outside of marriage, that person may be referred to as a co-parent. Co-parent is also the name given to the partner in a homosexual relationship who shares the household and parenting responsibilities with a childs legal adoptive or biological parent.

MPS FROM all sides called for an urgent statement on the state of NHS dentistry. As revealed in The Independent, dentistry is close to collapse, with complaints rising from patients who cannot find a health service dentist. MPs BACKED legislation to set up a Disability Rights Commission, which would represent the interests of the disabled. Andrew Smith, the Employment minister, said the Bill was “historic and long overdue”.
Facial Deformities and Dentistry There are many forms of recognizable facial deformities. The most common ones are as follows. 1. The term prognathism applies to a horizontal overgrowth of the lower jaw. The appearance of the prognathic patient often belies the patients gentle nature by causing a semblance of belligerence and hostility not unlike that of an English bulldog or a German boxer. In selected cases, prognathism can be corrected orthopedically by reconstructing the biting relationship using temporary splints placed on the upper and lower teeth. These are effective in repositioning the mandible backward and in training the muscles to restrain the forward position of the lower jaw. If the temporary restraints are successful, more permanent reconstruction is feasible. A surgical and orthodontic treatment can also be chosen.

The companys all-stainless steel motors are featured in this full-color brochure. Included is information on the Premium stainless steel motor line and Washguard[R] SST motor line. Both models are available in TEFC and TENV configurations and the Premium line is available through 10 hp and the SST motors are available through 3 hp. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
The companys permanent split capacitor (PSC) motor is designed to reduce motor watt and heat gain into the conditioned space. This results in reduced compressor loads with a corresponding reduction in compressor Watts, making the compressor work less and consume less energy, according to the manufacturer. The motors come standard on medium- and high-profile unit coolers, air cooled condensers, and most condensing units. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

A review of the marketing literature in both the traditional (offline) and new era (online) environments was undertaken to compare and contrast marketings role in both types of organisation. Insights derived from this review formed the basis for a series of in-depth interviews with leading marketing professionals in Ireland. The paper draws conclusions regarding the overall effect of the Internet on marketing. In particular it notes that, while marketing has evolved into an all-encompassing role in the organisation, the marketer remains the focal actor. The paper looks to a future with two distinct kinds of marketer and highlights the importance of retaining the traditional commitments of marketing practice. The Internet is a significant global medium for communications, content and commerce. It is a powerful tool for building relationships with all of a companys communication targets. It is cheap, immediate and repeatable. With appropriate technology it can be personalised and is measurable. Building one-to-one relationships with customers online provides marketers with the ability to cut through the clutter that is characteristic of traditional marketing activities such as TV/radio and newspaper advertising, PR and outdoor, ambient media.
The following paper represents the current state of research into the use and usage of the Internet for marketing purposes by small medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The paper discusses how the research was established, its design and development, and sets out the operational parameters addressed. It also identifies the factors that SMEs view as critical to the success or otherwise of their development of a web presence. * What is the main driver for an SME to develop a web site * What are the main, identifiable marketing benefits and drawbacks of a Web presence for an SME

Dear Heloise: I took out my wedding dress, which had been dry- cleaned and preserved (so I thought) in a box, and found a huge stain (probably wine) right down the front. I took it to a couple of dry cleaners, and none was very encouraging. Any ideas? –Laura L. Sadler, via e-mail Laura, we took your question to our friend Jane Rising of the International Fabricare Institute. She said that it would be difficult to determine any cleaning method since there is no mention of what type of fabric the dress is. If the cleaner you choose is a member of the IFI, it can call the institute for help in removing the stain from your wedding gown. We wish you lots of luck with this. –Heloise
A MYSTERY slasher has destroyed two wedding dresses with a knife in a callous attack on a Solihull charity shop - the third of its kind in recent weeks. Staff at the Acorn Childrens Hospice Shop in Stratford Road, Shirley now fear they may be targeted by the knifeman after similar attacks on shops in Northfield and Acocks Green. Police are now investigating after the culprit struck on Wednesday afternoon and used either a knife or razor blade to slash the bodice of a new wedding dress.

The Washoe County (NV) Library System ran six one-hour classes during NLW about the Internet. The Bensonville (IL) Community Public Library is advertising “Learn to Use the Internet Through Librarys Free Tutorials” where the sessions “are one hour long and each session is limited to one or two people. No computer experience is necessary.” They will also teach the use of CLeaRNET, the community computing network. Thats just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak: there are many, many libraries which are finding out that many of their customers have to be trained in the use of computers, catalogs and databases before they can make full use of all our new resources. And never mind just “full use”! Just using a computerized catalog is beyond the experience and perhaps even the willingness of a lot of people. To say nothing of the fact that in the name of service we have loaded up these catalogs with access to all sorts of databases to add to the confusion. No wonder we have to run classes. Where do the staff come from to run all these classes, especially the one-on-one classes like the ones in Bensonville? Or the one-on-one the librarian on the floor has to give to the puzzled patron sitting dejectedly in front of the computer?
During the next two months, library users may notice the sights and sounds of light construction near the video and current magazine reading areas. This extra activity is temporary and will result in a computer lab that better meets the steady public demand for training in using the librarys computers and the Internet. All of that will soon change, thanks to financial support from the Woodruff Charitable Trust. The Woodruff Training Room will be created using high-quality floorto-ceiling glass demountable partitions with wood trim. The 18-foot by 28-foot room will house 16 computer workstations, an instructors workstation, and a large-screen projection unit. The wall system is manufactured by HI, a Wisconsin firm. The library will pay for electrical work, cabling, small furniture items, and two additional computers to supplement 15 laptop computers purchased previously. The color of an automobile influences how much it costs to insure it. Comprehensive coverage protects drivers in all situations because, after all, it is comprehensive. Car insurance companies can charge whatever they want. Have you ever thought one or more of these statements to be true? You are not alone. A survey conducted by DriveSM Insurance, Mayfield Village, Ohio, from The Progressive Group of Auto Insurance Companies, finds many drivers accept common car insurance myths as true. Here is a sampling: Myth: Car insurance rates are not regulated and insurance companies can charge whatever they want. Fact: Each state has regulators who review the information companies collect as well as the rates they charge; insurers cannot deviate from those rates. Myth: Comprehensive coverage protects drivers in all situations. Fact: Comprehensive coverage is one type of protection available. It only pays for damage caused by an event other than a collision, such as fire, theft, or vandalism; it also covers weather-related (e.g., hail, flood) damage; and damage caused if a vehicle collides with an animal. Moreover, it provides a rental car if a vehicle is stolen.
Rarely a day goes by where you do not see, hear, or read about a car accident. Some car accidents are minor fender benders in which no one gets hurt while others are tragic multiple vehicle accidents resulting in injury and death. Our legal system is built on the belief that those injured by the carelessness of others have a fundamental right to be fully compensated for their injuries. Car accidents can result in injury to both persons and property. Car insurance serves two purposes. Your car insurance protects you when you are at fault for an accident. The other persons car insurance protects you when you are the victim of a car accident.

TURKEY are top of Group Seven, three points ahead of England, after a 2-1 victory in Macedonia. But the World Cup semi-finalists were given a shock by their unfancied opponents, who took a second-minute lead when Vlatko Grozdanoski headed home from close range. Macedonia, who face England on Wednesday, should have scored more before Turkey equalised against the run of play in the 29th minute when midfielder Okan Buruk fired home after a deflected cross from the right.
TURKEY SECURED a hard-fought 3-2 home victory over Macedonia in a Euro 2004 qualifier in Istanbul, maintaining a two-point lead over England at the top of Group Seven. Macedonia almost grabbed an equaliser in the dying seconds when Goce Poleski latched on to a through ball, only to fire wide of Rustu Recbers goal. England visit Turkey on 11 October for a game that looks likely to decide who wins the group and automatic qualification for the finals in Portugal. Spain suffered their second setback in five days as they were held to a goalless draw by Northern Ireland at Windsor Park. The Spaniards had cruised through their early games in Group Six but a draw against Ukraine, Saturdays shock 1-0 home defeat to Greece and last nights stalemate has left automatic qualification out of their hands.

A sweet flying delta wing Theres something eye-catching about a “delta-wing” type of aircraft. The mystique of an airplane with no fuselage or empennage piques our curiosity and challenges our instincts concerning aerodynamics. The Laser Models Laser Arrow delta wing is one in a new line of models distributed by Great Planes, and I quickly accepted the offer to review it. The kit consists of several sheets of laser-cut balsa and light plywood. To minimize damage, the wood sheets are secured to the bottom of the box with cardboard tabs. The hardware package is complete and includes pinned hinges, screws, devises, control horns, a fuel tank and other assorted parts. There is also a Nyrod (for throttle) and threaded-wire pushrods. The Laser-Lock building technique is very interesting; no plan is provided, nor is one needed. Instead, the building process relies on accurately laser-cut parts and interlocking tab-and-slot construction to ensure proper alignment.

If ever a composer fell victim to the autonomy of a single interpreter, it was Delius. Beechams magnificent recordings have dissuaded all but the most tenacious rivals, and it is high time we turned a willing ear to such sympathetic Delians as Ormandy, Slatkin and - if this CD is anything to go by - Gennadi Rozhdestvensky. Sir Charles Grovess Appalachia scores by dint of its physicality and expert pacing; again, the playing has its rough edges, but the climaxes have real weight. With Sir John Pritchards aptly fluid account of Summer Night on the River as makeweight, this stimulating CD serves as proof that, as far as Delius is concerned, there is life after Beecham! By comparison, even the biggest of big-screen TVs are peanuts. Trite. Insignificant. Small potatoes. Cheap n nasty. By recasting clot-promoting protein fibers found in blood into a fine meshwork, researchers have devised a wound covering that may speed healing and never need removing. Gary L. Bowlin and his coworkers have produced mats of the protein, called fibrinogen, containing fibers just 80 nanometers thick. Thats comparable in thickness to natural fibrinogen fibers in peoples blood, says Bowlin, a biomedical engineer at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Bowlin and his coworkers created their mats from human or cow fibrinogen by modifying a process, called electrospinning, thats long been used in textile manufacturing. After dissolving the protein in a solution, the researchers applied an electric field that forced the fluid through a narrow nozzle toward a metal plate. While in the air, the fibrinogen threads dried and twisted, landing on their metal target like a delicate network of spaghetti. Increasing the protein concentration of the initial solution made the mats threads thicker; decreasing the concentration made the threads thinner.
ROY, Utah — Clarcon Labs Inc., a biological chemical research and development laboratory for the advancement of skin protection and healing, announces the results of an exhaustive 12-year research utilizing natural intelligent ingredients resulting in the next generation of skin shielding, protection and healing on a cellular level, CitruShield. In all test cases it was found that through cellular skin shielding foreign and caustic substances such as cancer producing waste oils, acids, resins, grease, grime, paints and many other substances were repelled from skin. Additionally, the skin showed immediate signs of healing, moisturizing and soothing of prior irritations and pain, even from those struggling with chemotherapy, diabetes, and leukemia skin irritations. An independent laboratory test (Nelson Laboratories) concludes that such a shielding solution with interactive natural formulations continuously kills 99.3% of Salmonella up to 24 hours and continuously kills 98.7% of E. coli up to 24 hours. Omar Bonada, Founder and Lead Scientist of Clarcon Labs, has said: We are critically aware of protecting and healing the skin on a continuous basis utilizing natural and intelligent formulations; killing germs, bacteria like Anthrax, molds and fungus were part of the equation in creating this next generation of skin shielding; it works and does so while healing and repairing the skin. Developing a formulation that is made of natural substances, active, intelligent and is at a pH balance of 5.5 to match the skins pH is the key.

Private investors who use stockbrokers to advise them on their equity investments have always had problems in the performance of their portfolio. From this week, their efforts will be made easier by the joint launch between the FT-SE and the Association of Private Client Investment Managers and Stockbrokers (APCIMS) of three new indices, providing a yardstick against which to compare their portfolios performance. They will also provide a comparison basis from which investors can review their asset allocation and structure of their portfolios together with their stockbroker or fund manager. Finally, the indices aim to provide an industry-wide benchmark for assessing the performance of discretionary fund managers. Michael Read, head of fund management at Greig Middleton, and an APCIMS board member, says: “Private investors and trustees have long been waiting for readily accessible, highly visible and easily understandable benchmarks. “There is a real need for such measurement tools and I think investors will be pleased that information which has previously been available to institutional investors is now available to them cheaply and conveniently.” The three indices are based to the key needs of investors: for income, capital growth and a balanced portfolio. A survey of the model portfolios will be carried out quarterly and used to determine the weightings of the asset classes within each of the three indices. Although the survey will be conducted quarterly, the index weightings will be based on the annualised portfolio weightings, in order to maintain continuity. In determining asset allocation, the performance of UK equities will be measured by reference to the FT-SE All-Share index. Foreign equity performance will be measured by reference to the FT/Standard Poors All World Index, without UK stocks. Bonds and cash will be assessed by reference to FT-SE Gilts All-Stocks index. A sample of leading discretionary private client fund managers showed the average allocations for model portfolios changed according to whether they were income or growth producing, or balanced. Indices will be calculated by FT-SE International and both capital and total returns for private investors will be published. The underlying return calculations will assume the private investor purchases and holds the underlying stocks. Weightings will be adjusted at the end of each month to maintain the chosen weightings for the asset classes within each private investor index. Back histories will also be created, starting from 1986, in order to give a rough-and-ready reckoner of indication of historical performance. Experts at APCIMS who collaborated in drawing up the indices agree that they may not provide a perfect model for all clients. Michael Read at Greig Middleton points out: “For all sorts of reasons the construction of a clients portfolio of investments and its performance is unlikely to exactly mirror the indices. “Our benchmarks are not perfect. For example, they do not allow for a clients requirements not to invest in certain sectors of the market, nor do they take into account the capital gains tax constraints. None the less, they will be a very useful guide and will provide a good discipline for the industry. “In the main, we find our clients at Greg Middleton want to participate in growth as the market rises as well as obtaining a reasonable and growing income. “They recognise that we are not superhuman and do not expect us to achieve `top dollar appreciation all the time. They want safety and responsible investment management. “As a by-product, {these indices} will show over time how badly bank and building society deposits have served savers”
I FEEL chuffed with that Welsh performance because it should be used as a yardstick to measure how quickly things have been turned around. Wales are off to Dublin to hunt for a Triple Crown and there is the tantalising prospect of a Grand Slam decider against France if Warren Gatlands men can win at Croke Park. This game illustrated so much that has dramatically improved in the last few weeks. The main difference is the attitude and atmosphere within the squad.

The joys of flying on your birthday have been much discussed in this column: cakes, champagne and even upgrades can be laid on for the celebrant. But Kate Thorman of Oxford found that becoming 12 provided her with a Catch-22 problem. “So, on the one hand Kate is old enough to pay the adult fare, but on the other hand she is too young to travel without a paid escort,” says her exasperated father. At this point, Mr Thorman gave up and booked with another airline; then poor Kate found her birthday flight delayed by four hours at Birmingham airport. “Come back, Gorbachev, all is forgiven,” pleads Philip Robinson of Sheffield. “The last time I visited my friend in Minsk, this city was in the USSR. IN ALGERIA, Souad and Sherif Gasmi were able to stand on their own feet. They earned enough for a comfortable life, spending their money not only on their children, but also on their parents and a wide circle of nieces and nephews. They had no need of handouts. Mrs Gasmi, now 35, studied for years to qualify as a dentist. Her husband ran a childrens clothes shop. But, in a country crying out for qualified professionals, it is illegal for this well-educated couple to earn a living. They are asylum-seekers, and, as such, are forbidden to work. Instead, the British taxpayer gives the Gasmis pounds 148 every week. They get housing benefit too. Until their asylum application is decided, the state will fund them.

Editors note: This article is adapted from Menke and Bobbins Integrative Chiropractic, scheduled for release in 2007 by Elsevier Health Sciences. “The medicalization of early diagnosis not only hampers and discourages preventative health care, but it also trains the patient-to-be to function in the meantime as an acolyte to his doctor. He learns to depend on the physician in sickness and in health. He turns into a lifelong patient.” “Medicalizing” is forcing conditions into familiar diagnostic categories for medical management.1 Every complaint has an antidote, whether it needs one or not. ; Treating natural consequences of living as diseases that must be vanquished, leads to too much treatment and too much dependence on the authoritative “professional.” We tend to grant most, if not all of our decision-making authority to an expert in highly complex technologies. In the case of medicine, this often complicates the commonplace condition and prolongs selflimiting ones. Today, diseases and drugs are way oversold.

Over the years the concept of medical necessity has evolved to encompass a multitude of medical management strategies. Essentially, in terms of the contract language, medical necessity has become a workhorse concept to determine coverage eligibility. In the process, the interpretation of the term has taken on various guises and a variety of processes have been used to define medical necessity. The following discussion highlights the variable uses of the concept of medical necessity. 1. Determining the most appropriate intensity of service and place of service

Most of those loans — 1,1 23 — came under the SBAs 7(a) Loan Guaranty Program, in which a bank or financial institution makes the loan. The SBA guarantees 85 percent of any loan under $150,000, and 75 percent of any loan up to $1 million. The top bank in South Florida making such loans? Surprisingly enough, out-of-state banking behemoth Bank of America. It issued 653 loans totaling $22.8 million. Altogether, the SBAs South Florida office is now the third most active among 70 offices nationwide.
Demand for commercial loans has been higher this year than for several years, but rising interest rates could dampen business growth in 2006, bankers here say. A strong local economy and improved credit quality have contributed to growth in commercial lending this year, bankers say. The growth follows a sluggish period for business loans between 2001 and 2003, although demand started to pick up steam last year. Washington TWAs major markets are Spokane, North Idaho, Boise, the Wenatchee area, and the Seattle area, Stanton says. Its total loans through October were $2.3 billion, up 19 percent from the year-earlier period. Its standard commercial loans, which make up a majority of the banks total loans, were up 17 percent, compared with 15 percent growth in the first 10 months of 2004. Its real estate-related loans had risen 15 percent, and construction-related loans had jumped nearly 25 percent.

South Africa has introduced legislation that should see more of the rough diamonds it mines being polished and cut within the country rather than exported for value addition. The legislation will see a 5% export levy being imposed on unpolished diamonds and will seek to compel producers to sell up to 40% of their diamonds to the State Diamond Trader at what is described as fair market value. The remaining 60% can then be exported. The legislation is being proposed in a bid to boost local skills and job creation within the local diamond industry. It has already been approved by the National Assembly and is expected to be signed into law by President Mbeki.

Competing against the big box retailers is a challenge for Kansas small-town businesses, but state programs can help their owners work toward success. “There are so many challenges that face small mom-and-pop or individual business owners,” said Jeanne Stinson, state coordinator for the Kansas Main Street Program. “Theyre faced with huge competition from the big box stores and most of them, I think, in Kansas have learned to live with that competition. Its not going to go away.” “Promotional activities are one of those four points,” she said. “We also look to the organization itself — their group. Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

The national survey of more than 2,000 adults was conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality The survey also showed that Americans rely on the recommendations of friends and family more than standardized quality indicators when selecting a health care provider, and people have little confidence that employers will give reliable information about the quality of health care providers. And despite the undeniable draw of the Internet, people still trust doctors and pharmacists more than advertisements and the Web for information on prescription medications, the survey shows.

Meerkats Safari
250 colour illustrations L25 Thames Hudson ISBN 0-500-01886-3 The books introduction charts the legacy of European safari style, devoted to the pursuits of adventure and hunting with as many home comforts as possible. This style was first established in the early years of the Indian Raj, and readily transposed itself to exploring Africa. Some of the properties date from the early years of European colonialism, redolent of the whole `Happy Valley era, while others are more contemporary either being built or adapted more recently. Whatever the provenances, each home, safari lodge or camp is described with lavish colour plates. Interiors are invariably relaxed, comfortable and dedicated to fine living. The use of African themes and indigenous crafts and materials is compelling, but the sumptuous photography (familiar to readers of architecture and interior design magazines), while technically flawless, is a little unnerving. It is completely devoid of any human insight! Perhaps the thinking is that if you see anybody, be they owners, guests or workers, youll be distracted from the interiors splendours. But the book does offer the opportunity to put yourself in the picture. An index of properties that are available to paying guests, along with their overseas agents, is provided.

FEAR of exploitation and degradation is what inspired Congress in 1872 to set aside 2.2 million acres in three states to preserve the unique volcanic region known as Yellowstone as the worlds first national park. President Ulysses S. Grant signed the measure declaring that the sensitive area, with its roaring geysers and bubbling mud, would forever be set apart “for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.” Sadly, the short shrift given to Yellowstone, that grand old patriarch of parks, is symptomatic of a neglectful policy being applied to our national treasures across the board. At a time of war and tax cuts and huge deficits, something has to give. And under a spending bill recently approved by the House, a big loser is clearly the nations parks, already woefully underfunded.

For more information, contact Suzanne Jackson at 434-972-7278, sj@FourLeafPR.com.
In 1993, equipment leasing grew about 3 percent, a little better than 1992s growth, but still modest by historic standards. Expansion was hindered by the economys sluggish performance (see Trends and Forecasts for Equipment Leasing table). Leasing is a financial mechanism involved in about 32 percent of private, nonresidential purchases of producers durable equipment; the percentage has been relatively constant for the last several years. In 1992, according to an industry survey, growth in leasing was led by containers, with a 150 percent increase over the previous year. Furniture, fixtures, and equipment was second with a 100 percent increase, while materials handling increased 60 percent. Computers replaced aircraft as the largest leasing sector in 1992, following a 33 percent plunge in aircraft leasing because of commercial airlines economic difficulties (Table 1). C CORPORATIONBecause the corporation is a separate entity, it is also viewed as an individual taxpayer by the Internal Revenue Service. As a result, corporations are subject to double taxation, which means that the profits are taxed once on the corporate level and a second time when they are distributed as dividends to the shareholders. (If a business is eligible, it may elect S corporation status to avoid this negative characteristic of C corporations.)
S CORPORATIONIn Choosing a Legal Structure for Your Business , Stuart Handmaker explains that Essentially, there isnt any difference between a C corporation and an S corporation. Each of them is a corporation, and each one has the same characteristics, shareholders, directors, officers, records, minute books, problems, and the like. The only real difference is that the S corporation has filed a special form with the Internal Revenue Service stating that it wants to be an S corporation. What makes the S corporation different from the C corporation, then, is that it has special status in the eyes of the IRS. In short, the S corporation is viewed as a partnership or sole proprietorship for taxation purposes. This means that the corporation itself is not taxed, as C corporations are; rather the S corporations profits are passed on to its shareholders, who pay income tax on that money. In nearly all other respects, though, the S corporation is essentially the same as the C corporation.
