Hair loss is a normal part of the hair growth cycle. In fact, we typically lose 50 to 150 scalp hairs every day. Baldness (alopecia) results when hair loss occurs at an abnormally high rate; when hair replacement occurs at an abnormally slow rate; or when normal hairs are replaced by thinner, shorter ones. Daniel Taheri, MD, Board Certified Dermatologist has treated many patients with hair loss over the years. Recently, Dr. Taheri shared some valuable insight about the causes and treatments of hair loss, as well as natural solutions. A: Although there are many reasons for hair loss, 95 percent of all cases are due to Androgenetic Alopecia, which is more commonly known as Male or Female Pattern Hair Loss. This genetic condition occurs more frequently in males, affecting approximately 40 million men in the United States.
The Cause: Today, it is a known medical fact that hair loss is not due to poor circulation, lack of nutrition, or clogged hair follicles. In 95% of cases, hair loss is due to a genetic sensitivity of the hair follicles to a normal body hormone called Dihydrotestorone or DHT. This condition is known as Androgenetic Alopecia or “Male and Female Pattern Hair Loss”. We normally loose about 100 to 200 hair a day as a part of hairs normal growth and renewal cycle. Under the suppressive effects of DHT, the rate of hair loss increases and the hair follicles produce shorter and thinner hairs. Eventually the hair follicle dies and the hair is permanently lost. Treatments: There are no cures for hair loss but its progress can be stopped and its effects reversed to some extent. Currently there are two available medications for treatment of hair loss. Propecia[R] is a medication available by prescription for men only. It works by inhibiting the enzyme that produces DHT, preventing its destructive effect on the hair follicle. Rogaine[R] is a Topical formula and works by stimulating the hair follicle and keeping it in the growth phase.

Coubertins lexicon is littered with the term, or derivatives of the term, beauty. He talks of the “radiant beauty” of the Empress Eudoxia, (1) the “beauty” of gymnastics, (2) the “beauty” of a Worlds Fair, (3) and of course, the “beauty” of sport itself. (4) Places are similarly described–the “majestic beauty of the Parthenon,” (5) the “beauty” of Antwerp, (6) and the “beauty of a facility:” (7) he even talks of the “beauty of great spaces.” (8) The idea of beauty is also linked with other concepts in provocative and instructive ways: he talks of “beauty and moral strength,” (9) “physical beauty and health,” (10) “moral beauty,” (11) “beauty and perfection,” (12) describing the Olympics as “festivals of youth, beauty, and strength.” (13) So widespread is Coubertins application of the word beauty that it is applied equally to the descriptive and evocative–to the purely adjectival–as it is to the metaphysical and ontological. Ultimately, Coubertins multifarious conceptualization of beauty serves as the cornerstone of a cultural aesthetic of sport grounded in the Enlightenment promise of rational social progress and the imagined perfectibility of the individual and of society. The purpose of this paper is both to interrogate Coubertins concept of beauty as well as to identify and elucidate some of the philosophical ideas that served as historical precedents to this highly idiosyncratic formulation. In so doing, we hope to further analyze and dissect Coubertins particular aesthetic Olympic imperative, an axiology well understood to have stemmed from Coubertins reverence for the aesthetic vision of ancient Hellenism, but one that also ran through the idealist thinking of a wide variety of philosophers ranging from Shaftsbury to Goethe, from Leibniz to Humboldt, and from Weiland to Schiller. Of particular significance were the ideas of British theoretician of aesthetics John Ruskin, whose ideology inspired Coubertin to seek to beautify the entire Olympic edifice, to accomplish what Kruger calls “a noble Gesamtkunstwerk.” (14) Grounded in the history of ideas, we argue that despite Coubertins attempt to develop a cultural theory of sport which would complement his ideology of the Olympic Games, ultimately his moral reform agenda floundered not only because it was, as Brown rightly notes, “masculinist, paternalistic and conservative. a bourgeois discourse of art and culture where the pleasure of physical activity was necessarily abstracted to the level of the intellectual perception of beauty,” (15) but also because the very notions of moral beauty, or moral progress, or the beautiful soul, lost favor in European thought because they tended toward exclusivity, elitism, and the atomization of self, what Hegel called an “empty nothingness.” (16) From the very beginning of his Olympic odyssey, Coubertin waxed lyrical about the beauty of ancient Greece, the “majestic beauty” and “tranquil serenity” of the Parthenon, (17) and most especially the beauty of Olympia, “the cradle of a view of life strictly Hellenic in form.” (18) Profoundly enamored by the “holy city of ancient athletics,” “the capital of ancient sport,” (19) he dwelt on Olympias Edenic qualities, its “serene beauty and its tranquil majesty,” (20) on “the beauty of the surrounding countryside,” (21) “the beauty” of the “giant plane trees, olive trees and silver poplars,” (22) and on the beauty of the entire environment: “Cool, pure air, fragrant with the scent of the fields, wafted from the banks of the Alpheus,” he wrote during his visit to the site in 1927. “For a moment the moon lit up a vaporous landscape, then the starry night fell on the two thousand years I had come to recapture.” (23) Olympia, as a literary topos, served as Coubertins secular locus amoenus. Inevitably, given Coubertins trenchant romanticism and Hellenic zealotry, Olympia assumed a thematic significance well beyond a matter of simple geography and climate. Coubertin specifically praised the Greeks aesthetic ingenuity when creating “dominant silhouettes that integrated man, architecture, and countryside and produced an impression of beauty that appealed to the masses, even the least refined.” (24) Just as Julies garden in Jean-Jacques Rousseaus book Julie becomes symbolic of the “beautiful soul,” (25) so in Coubertins allegorical rhetoric, Olympia becomes the incarnation of what lurked at the heart of his aesthetic ideology, his notion of eurythmy. Echoing themes that were to continually infuse his thinking, he wrote that:

Therefore, surveys that assess public demand are vital components of any successful program. In the past, needs assessments and participation studies used in outdoor recreation plans and, in particular, the Arizona Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP) have not incorporated the needs and desires of young people. This generally is because survey methods such as telephone surveys have been more geared toward adults. However, young people represent a sizable segment of our population that places a heavy demand on our resources. The Arizona Outdoor Recreation Coordinating Commission and the Arizona State Parks Board recognized this oversight in our planning and, as a result, proposed a study to gather the needed recreation data from Arizona youth. The information gathered in this study helped us target young people with our programs, thereby increasing their participation in and enjoyment of these activities. In a day and age when young people often feel alienated from and ignored by the adult world, park and recreation programs that address young peoples interests likely will be more effective in keeping kids in sports and recreation programs and away from the dangers of the streets.

Admixtures: Water resisting - not proofing? I note that there are several articles relating to concrete in the ground in CONCRETE, February 2004. These articles contain claims and statements relating to concrete performance in resisting water penetration. These range from “Waterproofing. can be achieved. by using a water resisting admixture within the concrete.” to “admixtures may be used that provides waterproofing..of concrete” to “watertight concrete”. These article give the impression that concrete is, or can be, made waterproof or watertight with the addition of an admixture. These terms are considered in Concrete Society Technical Report 18 (second edition) A guide to the selection of admixtures for concrete and CIRIA reports 139 and 140 Water-resisting basements. Both documents indicate that concrete cannot be waterproof or watertight in the true meaning of the words since this implies impervious or absolute prevention of penetration by water in liquid and or gaseous form. The correct term that should be used is water-resisting, describing the ability to resist water. This depends on the concrete quality and the effect of any integral admixture. The main function of water-resisting admixtures is to reduce surface absorption and/or passage of water through the hardened concrete. Other benefits such as improved durability may also result from their addition. It is worth noting that BS 8007: 1987 Design of concrete structures for retaining aqueous liquids only requires a certain concrete grade, with limitations on cement content and water/cement ratio to give the necessary water-resisting performance. Water-resisting admixtures are not required. The weak points in any water-retaining or resisting concrete structure are seldom the concrete itself, but cracking and performance of construction and movement joints. These can be controlled with careful design and construction, thereby limiting and subsequent ingress or loss of water.

Engineering design is the process of transforming customers wants into design solutions. Conceiving, evaluating and selecting good design solutions are difficult tasks with enormous consequences. Fundamental conceptual weakness that occur due to the selection of a poor design solution may never be fully recovered by any subsequent design improvement. Many attempts have been made to establish good evaluation criteria for design solutions. A recent trend in engineering design research is the enhancement of the design process to create better design solutions. A huge body of research in engineering design has been published in German on design practice. Most of these efforts are listed in the German Guidelines VDI (Varian Destscher Ingenieure)–2221, [1], and in Hubka [2] and also Phal and Beitz [3]. The latest contribution in this stream is the axiomatic design as proposed by Suh [4–6] and Suh and Rinderle [7]. In this approach, two fundamental design principles, the Independence Axiom and the Information Axi om were proposed and such that any violation of these axioms in a design causes fundamental conceptual weakness in the design solution. For example, when the Independence Axiom can not be satisfied in a design functional coupling can weaken the design controllability. On the other hand, a design solution may suffer from complexity when the Information Axiom is not followed. Excessive complexity is a major contributor to any fundamental conceptual weakness in a design solution. The objective of this paper is to explore components of complexity in engineering design and to derive the mathematical relationships to quantify them. Section 2 discusses the necessary background in axiomatic design. Section 3 discusses general aspects of complexity. In Section 4, we identify and derive the mathematical relationships that quantify variability and vulnerability components of complexity in engineering design. Section 5 identifies correlation as another component of complexity under the assumption of a normal distribution. Section 6 is the conclusion section.

This study compares the opinions of mens movements participants of each other. Nineteen profeminist, 17 mens rights, and 18 mythopoetic activists returned surveys. Overall, the respondents had little awareness of each other. The profeminist and mens rights respondents had negative views of each other, while the pro-feminists were more familiar with the mythopoetic mens issues than with mens rights issues. Further, profeminist respondents were split regarding their opinions of the mythopoetic mens movement. Mens rights respondents had lukewarm opinions of the mythopoetic mens movement, and the mythopoetic mens movement participants were not familiar enough with either the profeminist or mens rights mens movements to respond. This study shows that mens movement rhetoric is unreliable in its representation of how mens movement participants view each other. Key Words: mens movements, profeminist mens movement, mens rights advocates, mythopoetic mens movement, masculinities The 20th century witnessed an emergence of several social movements addressing questions of gender definitions and relations. Three such social mens movements–mens rights, mythopoetic, and profeminist mens movements–are of particular interest because they represent various degrees of antifeminist, pro-male, and pro feminist sentiments and constructions of masculinity (Kimmel, 1987). While there has been much rhetoric regarding mens movements opinions of other mens movements in general, little has been written regarding the participants of these various mens movements and their opinions of each other. After a brief overview of each of the mens movements, this study will examine the opinions of mens rights, profeminist, and mythopoetic mens movement participants regarding each other.

I follow several programmes, including specific programmes under the Fifth Research Framework Programme and the Multiannual Programme for Enterprises and Entrepreneurship. In addition, I participate in the EUs research policy committee, CREST, which is organised jointly by the Council and the Commission. * What kind of decisions are taken by the committees? The programme management committees assist the Commission in drafting the detailed texts for the work programme and call for proposals. They discuss the performance of the programmes, how the budget is to be spent, the main orientations regarding the financing of the projects. The committees regularly give their opinion on lists of projects which the Commission has proposed for funding, following evaluation by experts. Although the committees opinion is not final, the Commission normally takes a decision in accordance with the views of the committees. CREST is a discussion forum in which comments, opinions and statements on different research issues are formulated and sent as advice to the Commission and the Council. Contrary to the management committees, CREST is also asked to give its view on future programmes. Thus, during last year, specific parts of the coming Sixth Framework Programme were discussed in great detail, which resulted in common statements or opinions.

AUSTIN, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Oct. 8, 1997–HomeCapital Investment Corporation (NASDAQ SmallCap:HCAP)(PCX:HCI) produced home improvement loans and other second mortgage loans for its fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 1997 of approximately $182 million, which represents an 81% increase over the $100 million of loans produced for its 1996 fiscal year. The fiscal 1997 loan production consisted of $163 million of FHA Title I home improvement loans and $19 million of conventional second lien mortgage loans. The Companys FHA Title I loans included approximately $130 million of loans purchased from correspondent lenders, $12 million of loans made directly to consumers, $16 million of loans purchased in bulk from another lender and $5 million of loans originated through dealer/contractors indirectly to consumers. The Companys conventional loans included approximately $18 million of loans made directly to consumers and $1 million of loans originated through loan brokers indirectly to consumers. John W. Ballard, the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Company, said: “We are pleased with the substantial growth in our loan production for fiscal 1997 in comparison to fiscal 1996.
